Mesothelioma Information
What Is
Mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a cancer of the
cells that form the membrane which surrounds the main organs
of the body. It is caused when a patient has had previous
exposure to asbestos dust or
fibers. |
|
What is
Asbestosis? Asbestosis is a
noncancerous lung disease associated with exposure to asbestos
fibres. There is currently no known cure
for asbestosis and the disease tends to progress with age and
the condition rarely improves or goes away.
How Is Asbestos
Related To Mesothelioma? The only known cause of
mesothelioma in the U.S. is when a patient has had previous
exposure to asbestos dust or fibers. Manufacturers using
asbestos knew about the hazards of asbestos many years ago -
but kept this knowledge to themselves. The first warnings to
workers exposed to asbestos fibres came in the mid-1960s, and
were terribly inadequate. Even today, workers are often kept
'in the dark' when working around asbestos and are at risk of
mesothelioma.

What Are The Symptoms Of
Mesothelioma?
Symptoms of mesothelioma often do not appear until 30 to 50 years after
exposure to asbestos. Shortness of breath and pain in the chest are often
symptoms of pleural mesothelioma. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include
weight loss and abdominal pain. Other symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma may
include bowel obstruction, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia, and fever. When
mesothelioma has spread beyond the mesothelium to other parts of the body,
symptoms may include pain, trouble swallowing, or swelling of the neck or
face.
