Mesothelioma Information
What Is
Mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a cancer of the
cells that form the membrane which surrounds the main organs
of the body. It is caused when a patient has had previous
exposure to asbestos dust or
fibers. |
|
What is
Asbestosis? Asbestosis is a
noncancerous lung disease associated with exposure to asbestos
fibres. There is currently no known cure
for asbestosis and the disease tends to progress with age and
the condition rarely improves or goes away.
How Is Asbestos
Related To Mesothelioma? The only known cause of
mesothelioma in the U.S. is when a patient has had previous
exposure to asbestos dust or fibers. Manufacturers using
asbestos knew about the hazards of asbestos many years ago -
but kept this knowledge to themselves. The first warnings to
workers exposed to asbestos fibres came in the mid-1960s, and
were terribly inadequate. Even today, workers are often kept
'in the dark' when working around asbestos and are at risk of
mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Information Questions and Answers
How Is Mesothelioma Diagnosed?
The symptoms of mesothelioma are often difficult to diagnose because they are
similar to those of a number of other conditions including asbestosis. Diagnosis
of mesothelioma will begin with a review of the patient's medical history,
including past history of asbestos exposure. A complete physical examination
will be performed, including x-rays of the chest and abdomen, and lung function
tests. A CT scan or MRI may also prove useful.in the diagnosis of
mesothelioma.
