Mesothelioma Information
What Is
Mesothelioma? Mesothelioma is a cancer of the
cells that form the membrane which surrounds the main organs
of the body. It is caused when a patient has had previous
exposure to asbestos dust or
fibers. |
|
What is
Asbestosis? Asbestosis is a
noncancerous lung disease associated with exposure to asbestos
fibres. There is currently no known cure
for asbestosis and the disease tends to progress with age and
the condition rarely improves or goes away.
How Is Asbestos
Related To Mesothelioma? The only known cause of
mesothelioma in the U.S. is when a patient has had previous
exposure to asbestos dust or fibers. Manufacturers using
asbestos knew about the hazards of asbestos many years ago -
but kept this knowledge to themselves. The first warnings to
workers exposed to asbestos fibres came in the mid-1960s, and
were terribly inadequate. Even today, workers are often kept
'in the dark' when working around asbestos and are at risk of
mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Information Questions and Answers
Are New Treatments For Mesothelioma
Available?
Because mesothelioma is very hard to control, the National Cancer Institute
is sponsoring clinical trials that are designed to find new mesothelioma
treatments and better ways to use current mesothelioma treatments. Before any
new treatment can be recommended for general use, doctors conduct clinical
trials to find out if the mesothelioma treatment is safe for patients and
effective against the disease. Participation in clinical trials is an important
treatment option for many patients with mesothelioma.
